My Favorite Project this Year as of July 1st
This project right here has been my favorite so far. It was a really small job, but it had a lot of work put into it. To start, the brick used for this home is an odd size 7 5/8"-8" x 2 1/2" x 4", so I had to order oversized brick that were too large, at 8" x 2 3/4" x 4", and shave off 1/4" from each of them. I really enjoy using a wet saw and I sat out on a nice day and just cut bricks; staying cool on a hot day is easier with a wet saw. After the prep work was done, the project start day arrived. Using a 14" Demo saw, I cut the joints to free up the brick to be removed with a 23lb Demo hammer. Finishing with a 9lb rotary hammer to clean any mortar that might affect laying in new bricks. I don't see a point in coloring mortar to lay bricks and to avoid discoloration between batches, I lay all bricks with uncolored mortar and then point with a single batch, in this instance, colored to match the existing. For the finish, I struck it with a wooden dowel and then when cleaning it, the day after, brushed it hard with a scrub brush. I wish I had the opportunity to stain the bricks to match, because you would never know, that those bricks were replaced other than the clear color difference. This client has more work on their home and I cannot wait to get back and do more.
